Patient Information

Patient: Juan Gomez, a 50-year-old Hispanic male, presents to the outpatient urgent care clinic setting in the late evening. He was in a fight while drinking with some friends at a local bar and was punched in the face two hours ago. A friend brings him to the clinic. His right front tooth was knocked out. He brings the tooth in a cup of water to the clinic. Mr. Gomez is bloody, smells of alcohol, and is anxious.

Goals: Your assignment is to interview an emergency patient you are seeing today. Please proceed to gather some information about the patient's history and background to determine the patient's chief complaint. Be sure to show concern for his difficulties.

Educational focus: The purpose is to develop critical thinking skills in patient communication and triage for management of dental pain, including communication about appropriate medication use.

Scope: This patient has talked to hundreds of medical students and has over 300 responses to almost 1300 questions. This patient can talk about topics in the areas of: Chief complaint, History of present illness, Medical history, family history, and Social history.
